we’re off on an adventure!
visiting family in the midwest we’re off our normal schedule, unplugged from electronics, and living our days together in nature. it’s been a blast!
my personal favorite has been the lightning bugs! we don’t have the magical bugs in the northwest and i really wanted my boys to experience them. they live for just a short period of time in the summer so for several months i wished and wished and prayed and prayed they would greet us when we got here and they DID! the first night we sat in the dark catching fireflies, letting them crawl on our arms and watching their little bodies light up in the dark. it never ceases to amaze me, to look out at the pitch black night alive with the blinking lights of those magical winged bugs.
nature is the best entertainment by far.
which brings me to my boys’ favorite thing in the midwest: catching frogs! and there are lots and lots of ponds to practice. after a week catching frogs in their grandpa & uncle’s ponds, they are most certainly the new resident experts. without hesitation they sprint and dive after them, naming them, letting them go, and catching them again. a hundred times over. it never tires, never gets old.
there’s something about nature unparalleled by all the technology and games we’ve engineered for our entertainment. something about nature never gets dull. it’s unpredictability, it’s wonder. it’s perpetual challenge and great reward.
the best thing you can do for your kids is give them the chance to fall in love with the outdoors. it’s a love that lasts a lifetime. a love that teaches: to be better. wiser, stronger, more compassionate and thankful. for small things. the best things. the real things.
we’re frog hunting. and we’re having a blast!
