Who doesn’t know what I’m talking about? Who’s never left home, who’s never struck out. To find a dream and a life of their own…a place in the clouds a foundation of stone? Many precede and many will follow. A young girl’s dreams no longer hollow. It takes the shape of a place out west but what it holds for her, she hasn’t yet guessed.
WIDE OPEN SPACES! Oh, Dixie Chicks. I really do love this song.
Sometimes no matter where we travel, no matter who we become we need space.
Space to move – to live – to risk – to dream – to fly and find out who and what we’re made of. Room to make mistakes. Space to stumble and fall and learn to get up stronger. Braver. Better.
Driving down the road home I was suddenly struck with the wide open spaces in my very own backyard. This is home.
About 5 miles down this road you find my little neighborhood. My not-wide-open space. But here…just a little ways down the road…is this. WIDE OPEN SPACE. Driving home today I dialed up dixie chicks on my iPhone and cranked up the music.
But what does it mean: a place in the clouds a foundation of stone?
I don’t really know. But here’s what i think.
When we dream dreams for us, for our life – our love – our character – our being – we spend time in the clouds. We release the trappings of this temporary reality and embrace the freedom of a dream. The power of what is possible.
And dreams are the stuff of our heart. The whispering of our longing, our deepest desires letting go of inhibition. Our dreams are tiny magnifiers of the soul. A window into who and what that is us.
The soul, the heart, the stuff of our dreams…THIS is the foundation. A foundation of stone.
Only when we release ourselves from the shackling burden of this reality and allow ourselves the freedom to delve into our dreams – then and only then do we glimpse the essence and foundation of our heart and soul – the very thing that gives us life and light and substance.
The foundation of stone is us. Who we are in the deepest parts of our spirit that we’re afraid to allow the world to see.
Our light and our dark, our fear and our failure and our power and strength and vulnerability and beauty. THIS is the foundation. This is true. This is the real we crave for in our wide open spaces – for room to dream and dare and risk and find who we are in this moment and BE IT!
Find your wide open space. It might be down the road or in your own back yard or perhaps in the quiet sanctuary you make on the roof of your house. Dream. Give yourself permission to drift off into the clouds and find your foundation of stone.
