Reclaiming your calendar

reclaiming your calendar

We’re on day 3 of our 31-Day Revolt Against Busy Challenge!

I recently read this quote by Bob Goff: “The battle for our hearts are fought on the pages of our calendars.”

Where do you find your heart?

I think for many of us {probably all of us if we’re being totally honest}, we’re not really living in line with our values when we rush from place to place barely arriving on time.

Who am I kidding? We’re all running more like 10 minutes late…because we’re so busy…

I mean, really? We’re not that important.

At least I’m not.

But sometimes my schedule likes to make me think I am.

And so I pack in as much as I can and certainly more than I should and I’m constantly shushing my kids saying, “hold on a second…just one minute…mommy’s talking…mommy needs to do this one thing…” and then two seconds later I realize I need to be somewhere in 5 minutes and it takes 10 to get there and I’m yelling at my kids, “c’mon guys we need to go! NOW!”

And the whole day operates on repeat.

Is it just me?

It’s terrible to admit this has become the status of our lives but I’m ready for a change.

I’m ready to cut out some of the frivolous and ridiculous so that I can have more time to breathe.

More time to laugh and sit and visit and do nothing.

More time for those still, small moments that take up the most room in our hearts.

Today we’re pulling out the calendar.

That’s right. Get it out.

If you’re anything like me you don’t really keep a calendar! Is that terrible?! You see, I still think I’m young enough that I can keep everything kind of loose in my head and it comes together the day before.

But it’s getting out of my hands. I write down some things in my phone calendar, some on the paper one hanging in my kitchen, and some I just stuff somewhere in my memory bank and hope it pops out at the right moment. I mean seriously.

I have lots of friends who keep their calendars strictly planned on their smart phones and I know some who still keep a paper calendar. Either way, today is about crossing some things off.

First, we’re looking for the ridiculous, frivolous or the things you just really don’t even want to do at all. These are those first few thoughts that came to your head during yesterday’s challenge, when you were preparing your mind for action!

Dr. Suess said: “Sometimes the questions are complicated and the answers are simple.”

1. Subtract more

2. Add less

Join me in an act of defiance against the culture of busy and make room for white space. I think you’ll be so glad you did.

Today’s Challenge: Cross off at least FOUR things from your calendar this month. This can be one weekly or 4, one-time commitments that are preventing you from carving out white space. You know, that much needed time for stillness and sanity that we need so desperately! I’m looking for, on average, ONE less thing PER WEEK in your schedule. And because it’s Friday, you have the whole weekend to complete this assignment. Once you start crossing off you’re going to feel so much lighter. I won’t limit you to four…in fact, what the heck, go crazy!
