Stitch Fix: When you need a personal stylist

Do you ever go looking in your closet only to find you have absolutely nothing to wear?

This happens to me all the time. And I have a closet full of perfectly fine clothes probably just like you. But sometimes my things are dated because I haven’t been shopping in a long time. Or sometimes my clothes don’t fit because hello holidays… Or sometimes I just want something new but don’t have the time to go to a handful of stores in search of the right thing.

After listening to some friends talk about Stitchfix for the last few months I am SO excited to say I’ve jumped on board! My first fix is scheduled and on it’s way and I couldn’t be more excited! If you haven’t heard of it, it’s a mail order personal shopping service.

After filling out an extensive survey on your style preferences, as well as selecting what type of clothing you want to receive (and which types you don’t) your sizes, and your preferred budget (ranging from as cheap as possible to super high end), a personal stylist will hand select 5 items and send them for you to review. You will then receive in the mail a box containing your five items, as well as a style sheet with different ideas for how to wear each item, and a postage paid pre-addressed envelope to send back any items you don’t love. By the way, shipping both ways is totally free. If you keep nothing, you send it all back in their pre-paid envelope and pay a $20 styling fee. If you keep one item the styling fee comes off your purchase. If you keep it all, you get a 25% discount.

In your survey, you’ll answer fun, easy questions like this:

As someone who loves clothes and fashion but lives in a small town with very limited options, I’m totally in LOVE with this! To be safe, I answered super honest in my survey. If I wouldn’t wear items in the picture I selected “HATE IT!” from the drop down menu. I don’t want to risk trying to be “nice” and getting a box of stuff I’d never wear. So I challenge you, if you try it, to be honest too!

You can schedule a regular fix monthly or less frequently or you can just go to their website and schedule a fix when you need…a fix! You can include a personal note to your stylist detailing what you’re looking for for an upcoming event, and you can even link to your personal style board on pinterest if you have one! I’m told each fix gets better and better as they get to know you, your style, your preferences, etc.

Here’s why I’m most excited:

1. I rarely have time to shop.

With young kids I just rarely get the time to head to the mall to shop in any kind of peace. Shopping is not my favorite thing anyway, and a strange kind of torture if I’m accompanied by my three very loud and crazy boys! To have a stylist get to know me and then send the clothes to my house for me to try on with my own mirror, my own lighting, and my own closet, shoes and accessories to coordinate and see if it actually works? Genius.

2. I do not always keep up on the latest fashion.

I love to look great but I’m not great at keeping up on the latest trends and styles. Most often I can be found wearing my athletic/yoga attire or pajamas. All day long. They’re my favorite outfits, bar none. But sometimes I need to dress up like a grown up and I fret I have nothing to wear!

3. Helps me save money.

Typically when I do shop, I overshop. I purchase a bunch of things because I don’t know when I’ll get out again and then I end up with a bunch of things that I have to make the dreaded trip back to return. With Stitch Fix it’s just 5 things. I only keep the things I LOVE. And the prepaid return envelope is right there, easy peasy, to send whatever I don’t want back, without having to go back to the store. Did I mention I hate making returns?

4. Helps me try new things.

When I shop I tend to buy the same things over and over and over again. The lululemon pants I practically live in. The same colors, styles, basics over and over. Stitch Fix gives me the opportunity to venture a little out of my comfort zone and yet stay within some set parameters. It also provides you with unique pieces that your friend down the street will not be able to find at the closest Nordstrom or local boutique.

5. It’s ridiculously convenient.

Did I mention it’s delivered? To your front door in a pretty wrapped package?! Ummmm, yeah. I think that point makes itself. With your shipment they also include style cards for how to wear and style your clothing.

Of course, I’m sure Stitch Fix isn’t right for everyone, and it does have its limitations. For example, you’re not really dealing with a stylist who is looking at you, your body, and hearing your needs and critique on each piece. It’s based on how accurate, honest and thorough you are in disclosing your preferences and comments to your stylist. Also, depending on where you normally shop, the clothes and accessories, while available in a range of prices, may still be too expensive for you.  From what I’ve seen so far they tend to be very reasonable, and definitely within the same range that I would normally spend. Who knew? See, now you too can have your very own personal stylist!

I’m so excited! I’ll post some photos with my Stitch Fixes when they arrive. If you are interested in trying Stitch Fix for yourself, you can sign up here.
