strength : you’re going to be free

i’ve been thinking a lot about strength and what it means to be strong. and i’ve come to the conclusion that i’ve had some things backwards, inside out, for a long time. i’m seeing more and more clearly that true strength is not of ourselves at all. because when we try to be strong we often turn hard or harsh, demanding our own way. it’s as close as we can get on our own. and though it might seem better or wiser at first blush, it’s really not strong after all.

i’m realizing that true strength lies in surrender. vulnerability and humility. each of us suffers trial, some much harder than others. but none of us get through this life unscathed. it is the strong who admit their failure, who get on their knees and seek wisdom.

and so if you find yourself in a place where you’re grappling with weakness and the battle for strength, i encourage you to rest. to wait. to linger in the pain for awhile. it’s not going to kill you, though it might break you for a time. but the darkness will pass and will leave you strong. humble. surrendered. at peace.

and – {smile} – free.

just a little poem i wrote for you {and for me}

we take pictures of life that we store in our head. visions and experiences and moments of dread.

fear and anxiety that keep us awake, a prisoner of our own mind that we make.

what we believe and who we allow, to speak into our lives in the here and the now.

we see where we faltered, let lies guide our choices, put idols and alters in place of God and our voices.

and we’re here in a darkness that’s still full of light, there’s just a tiny glimmer of doubt covering the bright.

it’s not all that we are, we never thought that it was, you see He’s carving out character, it’s just what He does.

and in breaking, we’re finding, He’s making us new. it’s not for the weak but for the very strong few.

you’re strong, yes you are, though you may not yet see; you are already more than you imagined you’d be.

not all of us travel the same path, that is true, but you’re no better than me, i’m no better than you.

don’t settle for easy, this life isn’t cheap. but He made you a promise you can bet He will keep.

and though there are days when the world just seems small, you are learning surrender in and through all.

the truth is inside you, you’re just beginning to see; wait it through, linger, you’re going to be free.

    I have strength for all things in Christ who empowers me [I am ready for anything and equal to anything through him who infuses inner strength into me; I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency]. Philippians 4:13, Amplified Bible
