summer grilling!

grilling cover image

there’s nothing i love better than summer grilling!  and i’m happy to say that with school ending today, summer has officially arrived!

a few of my girlfriends and i do a cooking group every 6 weeks where we spend a night together catching up and making 12-14 meals for each of our families.  this group works best as 4 or 6 people because many of your ingredients are most cost-effectively purchased at a costco or sams club.  we’ve found that the portions purchased here are better split into an even number of friends and more than 6 people just gets too chaotic.

okay, so here’s how we do it:

we rotate who is “planning” each time and that person is responsible for selecting 12 recipes, compiling the grocery list (costco and grocery store), doing the shopping for everyone, and hosting cooking night at their home.  it’s a big job.  the girls show up around 6:00pm with their cutting board, mixing bowl, favorite knife, apron and checkbooks!  we split the total evenly.  a typical cooking group night is anywhere between $180-$225.  BUT, you must consider that you leave with at least 12 incredible meals ready to throw on the grill/in the oven and the meals are made to serve at least 6!  at $13-16/meal it’s a better deal than feeding your family at mcdonalds AND it’s healthy and delicious too.  a typical night takes about 6 hours from start to totally cleaned up kitchen.  we never leave a girlfriend with a mess.

so here’s a glance at what’s on the menu and i’ve done all the prep work for you!  all you need to do is get a few of your closest girls, do some shopping and get grilling!

summer grilling menu!so i’ve attached your grocery shopping list….  and i’m linking to each of the recipes below.  if you use my list and are not cooking in a group of 4 friends, then you’ll want to divide all the ingredient amounts by 4.  but it’s so much more fun to do as a group.  it’s quality time to catch up, invest in your relationships AND provide for your family.  it’s a big win-win!  you can print the above menu to hang in your pantry or on freezer door here.

here’s the lineup of recipes:

rosemary flank steak

mojo flank steak

tri tip with soy and ginger

ginger sesame tri tip

grilled lemon chicken with peanut satay

mojito chicken

chicken with memphis rub

honey lime chicken

cilantro lemon shrimp

pistachio crusted halibut (or tilapia)

cumin, honey and mint marinated pork chops

grilled pork chops with mustard, rosemary and apple marinade

when making the meals, each cook picks a recipe and makes it for all four girls.  so at the end of the night, each of you has made 3 different recipes for 4 families.  we do almost all of our meals in ziplock bags.  laying flat they store perfect in your freezer.  here’s a look at cooking group day!

so grab a couple girls, a bottle of wine and get cooking!  it’s a really, really good thing.

have fun & i hope you enjoy the recipes!

Hi Tammy! I just found your site. Oh my I think I was lead your way through searching for my spirit. I look forward to reading your book. I just enjoyed reading about your group cooking on pinterest. It sounds like a lot of fun. Here’s my question – I have a very picky family. LOL!!! I’m sure you’ve heard that before but I really do to the point that if I made some of the recipes, they would refuse to eat. More willing to try some things and less willing to try others. So . . . .have you run into that type of problem before where some of your girlfriends’ families don’t eat something? And if so, what do you do?
    Shaynna! 🙂

Hi Shaynna! Find your group of friends (I suggest even numbers if you have a Costco or Sams Club because it’s easier to divide things in half) and then you can pick whatever menu works best for your families! Find friends who’s kids are similar ages and have similar tastes! A lot of times I use our meals when we’re having company as the “adult” menu and then make more kid-friendly dishes on the side. Have fun!! 🙂
