here in the northwest it’s hard to get a long enough growing season for tomatoes to fully ripen on the vine. i’m always picking mine green in the fall and have to ripen them on the counter in my laundry room window. this year i’m only doing the miniature bite size guys. regardless of which tomato variety you choose, here’s a little secret to making your tomato plant as healthy and strong as possible. when you buy your plant at the local nursery or grocery store, don’t plant him like the pot he comes in. take him out of his pot and pinch off the leaves about half way up the stem. plant all the root and half of the stem below the ground. the plant will root out the all the way up that stem, making it as strong, healthy and ‘rooted’ as possible! give your tomato plant the best start this year and plant him deep!
and don’t forget, a little compost can go a long way to a successful gardening season!
